BridgeA bridge is a dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth or teeth when there are teeth present on both sides of the missing tooth. The procedure involves preparing the abutment teeth (a tooth in front of and behind the missing teeth) to receive crowns. An impression is then taken and sent to a dental lab where a custom made bridge is fabricated. The bridge consists of a pontic crown (the artificial tooth) and the abutment crowns made as a single piece and cemented onto the abutment teeth. The number of abutment teeth required to support a bridge depends on the location of the missing tooth in the mouth and the number of missing teeth needing to be replaced. The materials used for the bridges include gold, porcelain fused to metal, or in the correct situation all porcelain. |
